Dunajská Streda lies on Žitný ostrov, or Rye Island, a large, flat river island formed between the Danube and the Little Danube in south-western Slovakia. The land is almost perfectly level, and the map shows it. Roads run out from town in long, straight lines across open fields, and the centre forms a compact, fairly regular cluster.
The town is the main centre of a region where a large share of the population is ethnic Hungarian. Hungarian is widely spoken, and the town is also known as Dunaszerdahely. It is also known for its thermal water baths and for its football club, DAC, one of the better-known teams in Slovak football.
