Te mapa
Ébano lies in the far east of San Luis Potosí, in the Huasteca lowlands near the border with Tamaulipas and Veracruz. The land is flat and warm. The town's map is a regular grid of streets around a central plaza, extending into newer neighbourhoods at its edges, with roads and railway lines leading toward the coast and the port region of Tampico.
The town holds an important place in Mexico's industrial history. Commercial oil production in the country began here in the early twentieth century, when a well named La Pez No. 1 struck oil in 1904. Ébano grew around the fields, pipelines and rail lines that followed, and oil remained a major part of its story.
An Ébano map poster shows a planned grid set among flat farmland and cattle pasture in the Pánuco basin. Beyond the last streets, straight roads and field boundaries stretch across the plain toward the rivers and wetlands to the east.
Commercial oil production in Mexico began at Ébano in 1904, and the town's growth has been tied to that industry ever since.
A regular pattern of streets and blocks radiates from the main plaza, giving the town a clear, ordered shape on the map.
Flat farmland and pasture surround the town in wide rectangles, crossed by straight roads leading toward Tamaulipas and the coast.
