El Ejido lies on the Campo de Dalías, a coastal plain in the province of Almería between the Sierra de Gádor and the Mediterranean. The town grew quickly in the second half of the twentieth century on intensive farming under plastic. Today it is surrounded by one of the largest concentrations of greenhouses in the world, an expanse often called the sea of plastic.
On a map this landscape makes an extraordinary pattern. Rectangular plots fill the plain edge to edge, divided by narrow access roads, so the town seems to dissolve into a fine geometric texture. To the south, the coast includes the marina and resort of Almerimar. To the north, the mountains rise sharply and close off the plain.
