El Milia lies in the east of Jijel Province, where the wooded mountains of Little Kabylie meet the broad valley of the Oued El Kebir. On a map, the town sits on rising ground above the river. Its streets bend with the slopes, and roads lead down the valley toward the Mediterranean coast a short distance north.
The town is one of the main centres of the eastern Jijel region and serves the villages in the surrounding hills. The valley has farmland on the flat ground by the river, and forested ridges rise on either side.
