Eppingen lies in the Kraichgau, the gently rolling hill country between Heilbronn and Karlsruhe in northern Baden-Württemberg. Its old town is compact and irregular, with narrow lanes and well-preserved half-timbered houses clustered around the market area. The town gives its name to the Eppingen Lines, a system of earthworks and fortifications built in the late seventeenth century to protect the region from invasion. Today the surroundings are peaceful: fields, orchards and vineyards on soft slopes, cut by small streams and wooded valleys. A light rail line links Eppingen to both Heilbronn and Karlsruhe.
