Ergani is in Diyarbakır Province in southeastern Turkey, on the road north toward Elazığ. It lies where the Mesopotamian plain begins to rise into the Taurus uplands, and the map shows it: streets climb and bend with the slope, and the ground behind the town steepens into a mountain ridge.
