Te mapa
Fanø lies just off the west coast of Jutland, facing the port of Esbjerg across a narrow stretch of water crossed by a short ferry ride. On a map the island is long and slightly tapered, with dunes, heath and plantation forest in the middle and a smooth, almost straight western shoreline. The eastern side, facing the mainland, is softer and more broken, edged with tidal flats that come and go with the sea.
Two villages set the pattern of the streets. Nordby, at the northern end where the ferry lands, has the island's main cluster of lanes. Sønderho, in the south, is a close grid of thatched houses and narrow paths that grew up around a seafaring community. Between them a few roads run down the length of the island, with side tracks leading west to the beach.
That beach is the island's best-known feature: a broad, flat band of sand wide enough for cars to drive on in places, and a regular venue for kite flying. The surrounding waters belong to the Wadden Sea, listed by UNESCO. A Fanø map poster captures the clean western edge, the tidal east and the two small villages at either end.
A broad, level strip of sand runs almost the full length of the west coast, giving the island a sharp, straight edge on the map and a famously open horizon.
The southern village is a tight cluster of thatched cottages and footpaths. From above it forms a small, dense knot of lines at the island's narrow tip.
The eastern shore meets shallow tidal flats that are part of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea, a soft, shifting edge in contrast to the firm western coastline.

Koteā ko Fanø
Fanø is a summer island for many Danes and a memorable day trip from Esbjerg for visitors. Its long outline and the two villages at either end make a calm, balanced composition, and a family holiday house or a summer spent there fits naturally under it.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, whether with a surname, a year or the name of a beach. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand both suit the dunes and heath.
