Fraiburgo lies on the plateau of western Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, at an altitude where winters are cool enough for temperate fruit. The town is modest in size, with a centre of regular blocks that thins out along roads following the rolling terrain. Beyond them lies a landscape of farms and forest remnants.
Fraiburgo is widely known as a pioneer of apple growing in Brazil and calls itself the land of the apple. Commercial orchards were established here from the 1960s with help from European growers. The name refers to the Frey family, among the town's founders. On an aerial view, the orchards show as finely lined fields around the urban area.
