Te mapa
Frameries lies in Hainaut, just south-west of Mons, in the Borinage, the coal basin that shaped much of Wallonia's industrial history. From above it is a spread-out town without a single dense core, made of several linked neighbourhoods that grew up around former pits.
The map shows long streets of terraced workers' houses, winding lanes following the gentle relief, and open patches where colliery sites and spoil heaps once stood. Some of these areas have turned green, so the pattern alternates between tightly built strips and wider open land.
One former colliery site now hosts SPARKOH, a science centre that reuses the industrial buildings. A Frameries map poster records the town's mining geography in a clear, unsentimental way: the lines of houses that followed the pits, the roads to Mons and the spaces the mines left behind.
Long rows of workers' housing line many of the streets, and on the poster they appear as dense, parallel strips running across the town.
Open areas where coal was once mined interrupt the built fabric, some now wooded or reused, leaving distinctive gaps in the map.
Frameries sits close to Mons, and the roads linking the two form strong lines running north-east across the sheet.

Koteā ko Frameries
Families of miners, many with Italian, Polish or Spanish roots, have lived in the Borinage for generations. A map of Frameries is a way of honouring that history and the streets where grandparents lived and worked.
