Frankenthal lies on the level ground of the Upper Rhine Plain, a short distance west of the river and just north of Ludwigshafen. Flat land makes for a tidy plan. The historic centre is compact and fairly regular, and newer districts, industrial areas and rail lines spread out around it. Beyond the edges, the map opens into the fields and small villages typical of the Palatinate lowland.
The town is known for the porcelain manufactory founded here in the eighteenth century, whose figures now sit in museum collections, and for its two remaining baroque gates, the Wormser Tor and the Speyerer Tor. Their names point to the old roads towards Worms and Speyer, and on a map you can still follow those routes leaving the centre to the north and south.

The centre was laid out on flat ground, so its streets form an unusually even block pattern that reads clearly at poster scale and anchors the whole composition.
