Te mapa
Freetown was founded in 1792 as a settlement for formerly enslaved people from North America, Britain and elsewhere, and it became the capital of Sierra Leone. It lies on the northern shore of a mountainous peninsula. It faces the wide estuary of the Sierra Leone River, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
Because the mountains rise steeply behind the city, Freetown is long and narrow. Its streets squeeze between the water and the slopes. The old centre sits around the harbour, and districts stretch east and west along the coast. Roads climb in bends up the hills, and the higher neighbourhoods look down across the estuary.
On the city's eastern side, Fourah Bay College, founded in 1827, is one of the oldest Western-style universities in West Africa. To the west the coast opens onto Lumley Beach and the Atlantic. A Freetown map poster shows a city pressed between mountains and water, its outline shaped as much by geography as by planning.
The broad Sierra Leone River estuary spreads north of the city, a large expanse of open water that gives the map a calm, spacious upper half.
The peninsula's hills rise directly behind the streets, so the built-up area ends against the slopes and roads snake upward in tight curves.
Districts stretch along the shoreline from east to west, forming a long, narrow band that ends at Lumley Beach on the Atlantic coast.
