Geilenkirchen lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, a few kilometres from the Dutch border in the Heinsberg district. On the map the town centre is a small, dense knot of streets beside the Wurm, a modest river whose meandering course runs through the whole municipality. The town is best known internationally for NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, home to the alliance's fleet of airborne early-warning aircraft.
