Gela lies on the southern coast of Sicily, on the wide Gulf of Gela facing the Mediterranean. From above, the old centre is set on a low ridge running parallel to the sea, with a main street running along it and shorter streets falling away on either side. Newer districts spread out along the coast and inland onto the plain.
Gela was founded by Greek colonists from Rhodes and Crete in the seventh century BC, and the playwright Aeschylus died here. At Capo Soprano, at the western end of the town, sections of its Greek fortification walls still stand near the dunes. In July 1943 the beaches of the gulf were among the Allied landing sites of the invasion of Sicily. The east side of town is dominated by a large industrial site.

A long, gently curving coastline with sandy beaches forms the southern edge of the map, a smooth, strong line against the busier pattern of streets.
