Te mapa
Genk does not have a single dense old centre in the way many Belgian towns do. From above, it looks like a loose federation of districts spread over the sandy Kempen plateau, separated by woods, heathland and ponds. Long, straight roads tie the pieces together, and the Albert Canal cuts across the south with its industrial docks, adding one strong diagonal line to the picture.
That pattern comes from coal. In the twentieth century Genk grew around three mines, Winterslag, Waterschei and Zwartberg, each with its own garden-city housing quarter of curved streets and small houses built for miners from across Europe. The mines have closed, and the Winterslag site now lives on as C-Mine, a centre for design and culture. The Hoge Kempen National Park reaches the town's eastern edge.
A Genk map poster shows this unusual layout plainly: rounded cité streets, open green gaps, the straight canal and the web of roads between them. It is a map that tells the story of a town built by industry and migration, and it reads as a set of neighbourhoods rather than one centre.

The canal runs across the south of Genk as a wide, straight line, with harbour basins and industrial sites clustered along its banks.
Large areas of pine forest, heathland and ponds fill the spaces between districts and continue east toward the Hoge Kempen National Park.

Koteā ko Genk
Many families in Genk trace their story back to the mines, and to parents or grandparents who arrived from Italy, Turkey, Greece or elsewhere to work there. A map of the town holds that history without spelling it out, which makes it a good gift across generations.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps a district name or the year a family settled here, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9, and printed posters with an optional wooden frame are also available.
