Gheorgheni, known in Hungarian as Gyergyószentmiklós, sits in the Giurgeu Depression. This broad, high basin in the Eastern Carpathians is ringed by forested ridges. The upper Mureș flows through the basin a little west of town. On a map, Gheorgheni spreads over the flat valley floor with a clear centre and roads fanning out into farmland.
The town has a mostly Hungarian-speaking population and a long Armenian heritage, which is still visible in its Armenian Catholic church. Further east, the road climbs through the mountains towards Lacu Roșu, the Red Lake. The lake formed in the nineteenth century when a landslide dammed a valley. Beyond it lies the deep Bicaz Gorge.
