Gragnano sits on the slopes where the Lattari Mountains meet the plain, just inland from Castellammare di Stabia, at the base of the Sorrento peninsula. It has made dried pasta for centuries. Today Pasta di Gragnano is protected by an IGP designation, and the town's name appears on packets around the world.
The geography helped. Streams coming down from the mountains powered mills in the Valle dei Mulini, and the mix of sea air and mountain wind was ideal for drying pasta outdoors. Via Roma, the long straight main street, was laid out in the nineteenth century partly so that pasta hung in the open could catch the sun and the breeze.
A Gragnano map poster shows that link between landscape and trade. The straight line of the main street contrasts with steep, winding roads climbing into the hills, and the valley of the old mills cuts in behind the town. The area also produces Gragnano, a lightly sparkling red wine.
The town's long straight main street was designed partly for drying pasta outdoors. On the poster it stands out as a bold, deliberate line through the centre.
Behind the town, a narrow valley once held a series of water-powered mills. Its winding course leads up into the mountains.
The Lattari Mountains rise steeply above Gragnano. Roads switch back up the hillsides, adding curving detail around the town's edges.

Koteā ko Gragnano
For cooks, pasta lovers and anyone with Campanian roots, Gragnano is more than a town. A map of it makes a thoughtful piece for a kitchen or dining room, where the name already means something.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a family name or the date of a trip along the coast. Paper and Sand feel warm and Mediterranean, and Classic, Noir and Blueprint are there too.
