Gulou is a town within Chongqing Municipality, in the rolling hill country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. This landscape has almost no flat ground. Low hills and ridges are covered with terraced fields, and settlements sit in the valleys or along the ridges where roads can find a path.
On a map, the town's built-up area forms a modest, irregular cluster, shaped more by the terrain than by any plan. Roads wind between the hills to connect it with nearby towns, and small reservoirs, ponds and streams dot the countryside around it, a feature of farming in this part of China.
