Te mapa
Hurricane lies in Washington County in south-western Utah, on a broad bench above the Virgin River. To the east, the Hurricane Cliffs rise abruptly, marking the line of a major geological fault. On a map, the town is a regular grid of streets on the flatter land, bounded by the river gorge on one side and the cliffs on the other.
According to local tradition, the name came from a gust of wind that blew the top off Mormon leader Erastus Snow's buggy nearby, prompting him to call the place Hurricane Hill. The town grew once a canal brought water from the Virgin River to irrigate the bench, and today it is a gateway for visitors to Zion National Park and Sand Hollow reservoir.
A Hurricane map poster shows the neat pioneer grid, the deep curve of the river canyon and the line of the cliffs. Newer neighbourhoods and golf courses spread out across the desert. It is a map with strong natural boundaries and a clear, orderly centre, a fine subject for a minimal print.
The cliffs along the Hurricane Fault rise sharply to the east of town, a dramatic natural boundary for the settlement.
The Virgin River has cut a canyon along the edge of the bench, and its winding course contrasts with the straight streets.
The original town was laid out as a wide, regular grid, still clearly visible at the centre of the map.
