Huy lies in the province of Liège, on the Meuse where the small Hoyoux river flows in from the south. The map shows a town shaped by its valley: the broad river curves through the centre, bridges link the two banks, and the old streets pack into the narrow flat ground beside the water before climbing steep slopes on either side.
Above the town stands the fort, built in the nineteenth century on a rocky height over the Meuse, and below it rises the Gothic collegiate church of Notre-Dame. Cycling fans know Huy for the Mur de Huy, a short, extremely steep climb that serves as the finish of the Flèche Wallonne race each spring.
A Huy map poster captures the drama of a river town in a deep valley. The wide sweep of the Meuse, the thin lines of the bridges and the dense old centre sit at the heart of the design, while the roads winding up the hillsides fan outward. It is a compact map with a strong sense of terrain.
The Meuse curves broadly through the town, crossed by several bridges that appear as fine lines linking the dense streets on either bank.
The nineteenth-century fort occupies a rocky height directly above the Meuse, its position explaining how the old town is squeezed onto the valley floor.
A short, very steep road climbing out of the valley, the Mur de Huy is famous as the finishing climb of the Flèche Wallonne cycling race.
