Te mapa
Ilkeston sits on a ridge on the eastern edge of Derbyshire, looking over the valley of the River Erewash. The town centre is on the higher ground, with the Market Place and St Mary's Church at its heart. Streets of terraced houses run down the slopes on either side. On a map, the centre is a knot from which roads spread in several directions.
To the east, the Erewash and the Erewash Canal run side by side along the valley floor, marking the county boundary with Nottinghamshire. Beyond them stands the Bennerley Viaduct, a long Victorian wrought-iron railway bridge that now carries walkers and cyclists across the valley. The town grew on coal mining, ironworking, and the lace and hosiery trades.
Ilkeston is also known for its Charter Fair, held in the Market Place each October. The fair traces its roots to a royal charter granted in the thirteenth century. An Ilkeston map poster captures the town's layout from ridge to valley, with the parallel lines of river and canal and the dense grid of terraces in between.

This long iron railway viaduct across the Erewash valley has reopened as a walking and cycling route, and it cuts a clear line across the map.
