Illingen lies in the Neunkirchen district of Saarland. It is less a single town than a group of villages spread over rolling, partly wooded hills. On a map, several built-up areas with their own small centres are connected by winding country roads, with woodland and meadows in between. The small river Ill, a tributary of the Saar, gives the municipality its name and its main valley.
The best-known landmark is Burg Kerpen, a castle in the centre of Illingen that is used today for cultural events.
