Irati is in the south-central part of Paraná, on the rolling highlands of southern Brazil. The city grew along the railway and the main road across the region, and the map shows it following the lie of the land: a central grid in the valley, with streets that bend and branch as they climb the surrounding hills.
Around the city, the landscape is a mix of farmland, pasture and patches of forest, with small streams in the valleys between rounded hills. Rural roads spread out to the smaller farming communities, many of them founded by European immigrants.
The region around Irati was settled in part by Ukrainian and Polish immigrants, whose churches and traditions are still part of local life.
