Te mapa
Jülich lies on the River Rur in North Rhine-Westphalia, between Aachen and Cologne. Its map is shaped by an unusual history: in the sixteenth century the Italian architect Alessandro Pasqualini redesigned the town as an ideal Renaissance city, with a regular street plan and a star-shaped citadel.
The citadel, with its angular bastions, remains one of the most distinctive shapes on any German town map. Around it, the old centre follows a planned layout, rebuilt after extensive destruction in 1944. The Rur and its floodplain run along the eastern side, bringing a green, winding contrast to the geometry.
A Jülich map poster also points to the town's modern identity. It is home to Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of Europe's large research centres, located in the forest to the east. Nearby, the landscape is marked by the lignite mining areas of the Rhineland, which change the land's shape on a grand scale.
The Renaissance citadel's pointed bastions form a sharp, geometric star at the edge of the old town, a shape that stands out immediately on a monochrome poster.
The old town's streets follow Pasqualini's ideal-city plan, with a more regular pattern than typical medieval towns, rebuilt faithfully after the Second World War.
The River Rur and its green meadows run past the town, a soft, meandering corridor that balances the rigid lines of the fortifications.
