Kairāna lies in the Shamli district of western Uttar Pradesh, close to the Yamuna River, which marks the border with Haryana just to the west. The town sits on the flat, fertile Doab plain, and its map is centred on a dense historic core of narrow, winding lanes. Around it, the streets loosen into newer residential areas that fade into sugarcane and wheat fields.
The town has a special place in Indian music as the ancestral home of the Kirana gharana, one of the major schools of Hindustani classical singing. The style is known for its slow, careful unfolding of melody.
