Te mapa
Kankan is the main city of Upper Guinea, set in the savanna of the country's east on the banks of the Milo River, a tributary of the Niger. From above, the river forms a winding edge along the city, and the streets spread away from it in a mixture of straight avenues and irregular neighbourhood lanes that loosen as they reach the surrounding countryside.
For centuries Kankan has been an important Malinké town and a centre of trade and Islamic learning in the region. It later became the terminus of the colonial railway that ran inland from Conakry on the coast. Today it is home to a large public university, and it remains a commercial hub linking Upper Guinea with markets across the border in Mali.
The landscape around the city is open and fairly flat, with fields, scattered trees and seasonal waterways. A Kankan map poster shows how the city meets that land: dense in the older quarters near the river, more open toward the edges, with the curve of the Milo providing a natural frame on one side.
The river curves past the city on its way north to the Niger, and its banks give the map a strong natural line against the pattern of streets.
Near the river the neighbourhoods are denser, with short, irregular lanes that reflect the city's long history as a trading and learning centre.
Main roads leave the city in several directions across the savanna, drawing clear lines toward the towns and markets of Upper Guinea.

Koteā ko Kankan
Kankan holds a special place for many Guineans, as a family home, a university town or a historic centre of Malinké culture. A map of its streets and river keeps that connection visible every day.
