Te mapa
Kempston Hardwick is a small place in the Marston Vale, south of Bedford, and its map is defined more by landscape than by streets. A handful of roads cross open farmland, and a railway line runs through on its way across the vale. The built-up area is modest, with scattered buildings and industrial sites rather than a dense town centre, which gives the map a spacious, open feel.
The wider vale has long been shaped by clay extraction and brickmaking, and the legacy shows from above. Former clay pits have become lakes and wetlands, their irregular outlines standing out against the straight field boundaries around them. The Marston Vale Millennium Country Park lies nearby, part of an effort to turn this worked landscape into woodland and water.
A Kempston Hardwick map poster is an understated choice. It will not show a grand old town or a famous skyline, but it does record a real piece of Bedfordshire: rail, road and water set in a broad clay plain. For someone with ties to the area, that plainness is the point, a map that looks exactly like the place feels.
A single railway line crosses the area on its route between Bedford and Bletchley, drawing a long straight stroke through the otherwise open map.
Flooded pits left by the brick industry appear as lakes with sharp, irregular edges, a distinctive feature of this part of the vale.
Most of the frame is taken up by fields and hedgerows, with roads and buildings sparse enough that each one reads clearly.
