Te mapa
Kirishima covers a large area of Kagoshima Prefecture. It runs from the northern tip of Kagoshima Bay, which faces Sakurajima, up into the Kirishima volcanic mountains on the border with Miyazaki. The urban districts cluster near the coast, and the rest of the city's territory is forest, farmland and volcanic highland.
In Japanese mythology, the peak of Takachiho-no-mine is where the grandson of the sun goddess descended to earth, and Kirishima Shrine is linked to that legend. The mountains are also known for hot springs. Kagoshima Airport lies within the city limits, and Sakamoto Ryōma is often said to have made one of Japan's earliest honeymoon trips here.
A Kirishima map poster focuses on the densest part of the city, near the bay. It shows river valleys, rail lines and a curving shoreline, with rising ground beyond. In monochrome, the contrast between the settled coast and the empty highlands is very striking.
The northern edge of Kagoshima Bay forms the lower part of the map. Across it, the view extends towards Sakurajima, the region's defining volcano.
Rivers descend from the mountains to the bay, and streets and rail lines follow their valleys. They create strong, flowing lines through the urban districts.
North of the coast, the ground rises towards the Kirishima range. The street network thins quickly, and large calm areas of paper are left.
