Kulp is a district town in the north of Diyarbakır Province, in south-eastern Turkey, where the plains of upper Mesopotamia begin to rise into the Southeastern Taurus mountains. The town sits among hills and valleys. Its streets follow the terrain rather than a strict plan, bending around slopes and spreading along the valley floor.
The countryside around Kulp is rugged and, by regional standards, green. Streams run down from the higher ground, orchards and small fields cover the lower slopes, and villages are scattered along mountain roads. On the map these rural connections appear as thin, winding lines leading outward from the more compact centre.
