Te mapa
La Madeleine is a small commune right next to Lille, within the Métropole Européenne de Lille. It has no real gap between itself and its neighbours. Its streets continue straight into Lille, Marcq-en-Barœul and Lambersart, so on the map the boundary is almost impossible to see. Its area is small, but it is densely built.
The strongest line is the Grand Boulevard. This broad, tree-lined avenue, built at the start of the twentieth century to link Lille with Roubaix and Tourcoing, crosses La Madeleine at an angle. Around it, rows of brick terraced houses form narrow, regular blocks, and railway lines and main roads mark the western and southern edges.
A La Madeleine map poster shows a classic piece of northern French urban fabric: fine-grained, orderly and continuous. The diagonal boulevard gives the composition its energy, and the tight residential blocks fill the rest of the frame with even, rhythmic detail.
The wide avenue from Lille toward Roubaix and Tourcoing crosses the commune on a diagonal. It is the defining feature of its map.
Narrow streets lined with brick row houses create a dense, regular pattern typical of the Lille metropolitan area.
La Madeleine's streets flow directly into Lille and its neighbours, so the map reads as part of a continuous metropolitan whole.
