The industrial valley
Former and working industrial sites occupy long, broad plots through the middle of town, a scale of building that contrasts sharply with the small residential blocks around them.

Te mapa
Le Creusot grew almost entirely around one enterprise. After the Schneider brothers took over the local forges in 1836, the town expanded into one of France's great centres of heavy industry, producing locomotives, steel and armaments. The map still shows that origin: large industrial footprints along the valley floor, with streets of houses climbing the slopes around them.
Near the heart of town the Château de la Verrerie, once a royal crystal works and later the Schneider family residence, sits in its park beside the older centre. At the edge of town a giant steam hammer, the emblem of the industrial era, stands on display. The surrounding hills of Saône-et-Loire soften every edge of the plan.
A Le Creusot map poster captures a place where industry literally drew the streets, so it makes sense to frame the valley as a whole. In monochrome the long factory sites become solid geometric blocks, the housing estates become finer textures, and the green hills turn into quiet white space around them.
Former and working industrial sites occupy long, broad plots through the middle of town, a scale of building that contrasts sharply with the small residential blocks around them.
The former crystal works turned family château stands in landscaped grounds near the centre and now houses a museum of the town's industrial and social history.
Rows of company-built housing and later estates spread up the slopes, recording how the Schneider firm shaped where and how its workforce lived for generations.

Koteā ko Le Creusot
For families with roots in the forges, or for anyone interested in France's industrial past, Le Creusot is more than a small Burgundy town. Its plan tells a story of work and invention that reads clearly on a wall.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a family name or a year at the works, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the town's engineering heritage especially well.
