Te mapa
Leighton Buzzard and its neighbour Linslade face each other across a narrow valley in southern Bedfordshire. The River Ouzel and the Grand Union Canal run side by side through the gap between them, and the West Coast Main Line follows the same corridor. On a map, the valley appears as a set of parallel lines, with the two towns spreading out on either side.
The old centre of Leighton Buzzard is laid out along a broad market street with a medieval market cross. The tall spire of All Saints church stands nearby. The town is also known for its sand. Local quarries supplied high-quality silica sand for generations, and the narrow-gauge Leighton Buzzard Light Railway was built to carry it.
A Leighton Buzzard map poster shows the town in the context of the valley that shaped it: the water and rail lines at its centre, the market town to the east and Linslade to the west. It is a tidy, balanced composition with a clear sense of place.
The Grand Union Canal and the Ouzel run close together between the two towns. They form a double line of water through the middle of the poster.
The historic high street widens into a long market space. It stands out as the backbone of the older town, with the cross at its centre.
The route of the narrow-gauge light railway once linked the sand quarries to the town. It is a reminder of the industry that made the place distinctive.
