Te mapa
Lüderitz sits on a rocky stretch of Namibia's southern Atlantic coast, where the Namib Desert runs straight down to the sea. From above, the town looks compact and irregular. Short streets bend around bare granite knolls instead of following a clean grid, and the shoreline of Lüderitz Bay breaks into coves, jetties and a narrow causeway out to Shark Island.
The town takes its name from Adolf Lüderitz, the Bremen merchant who acquired the bay in 1883. Buildings from the German colonial period still stand on the slopes, and the Felsenkirche church sits on a rise above the harbour. Inland, the diamond rush of the early twentieth century left Kolmanskop, a ghost town now slowly filling with sand.
On a Lüderitz map poster the contrast is sharp. A dense cluster of lines holds to the water's edge, then stops where the desert begins. The bay, the island and the scattered headlands give the composition a strong coastal outline, while the empty land to the east leaves a wide, quiet field of white that frames the town.
A sheltered inlet on an exposed coast. Its jagged shoreline, harbour works and small coves form the most detailed edge of the map.
A rocky peninsula joined to the town by a causeway, reaching into the bay and giving the coastline a distinctive hooked shape.
Roads curve around granite hills instead of running straight, so the street pattern looks loose and organic rather than planned.

Koteā ko Lüderitz
For people who have lived, worked or travelled here, Lüderitz is often remembered as a place at the edge of things, a town between desert and ocean. The map captures that isolation in a single image, with the coastline doing most of the work.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add a date or the coordinates line, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the desert setting, while Blueprint gives the bay a nautical feel.
