Lunel lies in the Hérault department of southern France, roughly midway between Montpellier and Nîmes, on the plain that stretches towards the lagoons and the Camargue. Its historic centre is a tight knot of narrow streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards that follows the line of the old walls. Newer districts spread outward along the main roads and the railway.
In the Middle Ages Lunel was a renowned centre of Jewish learning, home to scholars whose work was known across Europe. Today it is associated with Muscat de Lunel, a sweet wine made from the vineyards around the town. The bull traditions of the Camargue also remain part of local festivals. A canal runs from the town towards the Étang de l'Or.
A Lunel map poster makes the ring of boulevards its centrepiece. A compact oval of old streets is surrounded by broader avenues, then suburbs, then the geometric pattern of vineyards on the plain. The canal adds a straight line heading south. In black and white, the layers from medieval centre to countryside are unusually clear for a town of this size.
Boulevards trace the line of the former walls around a compact centre of narrow, winding streets, creating a clear oval at the heart of the map.
A canal runs south from the town towards the Étang de l'Or lagoon, drawing a straight, deliberate line across the flat coastal plain.
Parcels of vines and farmland surround the town in a regular patchwork. They produce Muscat de Lunel, the sweet wine the area is known for.
