Te mapa
Mafra lies in the far north of Santa Catarina, on the plateau country of southern Brazil. Its defining feature on the map is the Rio Negro, which separates Mafra from the town of Rio Negro on the Paraná side. The two street grids come right down to the banks and face each other, so from above they read almost as one town split by a winding river.
Mafra was created as a separate municipality in 1917, after the long dispute between Santa Catarina and Paraná over the Contestado region was settled. Its name honours Manuel da Silva Mafra, a jurist who argued Santa Catarina's side in that dispute. The border is still visible on the map, drawn along the river's curves.
Away from the river the town spreads over gently rolling ground, with roads heading out to the farmland and forest of the plateau. A Mafra map poster captures that unusual arrangement: two towns, two states and one river, all in a single frame.
A winding river between Mafra and its twin city. It is the main line of the whole map and doubles as the boundary between Santa Catarina and Paraná.
The streets of Mafra and Rio Negro run down to opposite banks and meet at the crossings, which makes the two towns look like mirror images from above.
Outside the centre, roads lead off across rolling farmland. Their long lines stretch out from the compact town towards the edges of the frame.

For families on either side of the river, this map shows how closely the two towns are tied together. It is a meaningful piece for anyone whose history crosses that border, or for someone who left the plateau and still thinks of it as home.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be edited, for example to add a family name or a year. Print it in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
