Te mapa
Maldegem lies in the north-west of East Flanders, in the Meetjesland region between Bruges and Ghent, close to the Dutch border. On a map it appears as a compact town centre surrounded by a wide, flat countryside of fields and hamlets, with straight roads and drainage ditches dividing the land into a patient grid of parcels.
Water shapes much of the wider map. The Leopold Canal and the Schipdonk Canal run side by side through the countryside to the north, long straight lines laid across the landscape in the nineteenth century. The municipality also includes Adegem, where a Canadian war cemetery honours soldiers who fell in the liberation of the region in 1944, and it is home to a well-known steam railway centre.
A Maldegem map poster shows the quiet geometry of Flemish lowland life: the church-centred core, ribbon streets reaching toward neighbouring villages, and the ruler-straight canals cutting across the fields. It is a restrained, orderly composition that suits the Classic and Blueprint styles particularly well.
Two canals run side by side through the northern part of the municipality, drawing parallel lines across the map with open farmland on either side.
The historic core forms a small, dense knot of streets around the church, from which roads lead outward toward the surrounding villages and hamlets.
Fields divided by ditches and straight lanes create a fine rectangular pattern in the countryside, characteristic of the flat, drained lands near the Dutch border.
