Te mapa
Mek'ele stands on a high plateau in northern Ethiopia at more than 2,000 metres, and is the capital of the Tigray region. The terrain is open and dry, broken by low ridges, and the city has grown outward from a compact historic centre into a wide network of newer neighbourhoods. On a map its streets mix radial and grid patterns, with seasonal streams leaving thin lines through the fabric.
The city rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century when Emperor Yohannes IV made it his seat and built a palace here, now a museum. Mek'ele was also a key point on the salt caravan routes from the Afar lowlands to the east. Today it is home to Mekelle University, and the Martyrs' Memorial Monument is a prominent landmark.
A Mek'ele map poster shows a city defined by the plateau. There is no coastline or large river, but there is a clear centre, a set of long roads leaving toward the rest of Tigray, and a soft, dispersed edge where the city meets farmland and hills. The result is open, legible and quietly structured.
The area around the palace of Yohannes IV forms a denser core of shorter streets, the point from which the modern city has expanded.
Main roads leave the centre toward Adigrat, Addis Ababa and the Afar lowlands, giving the map a strong sense of direction.
Streets thin out into open ground and scattered settlement at the outskirts, leaving generous blank space that frames the city clearly.

Koteā ko Mek'ele
Mek'ele is home for many Tigrayans in Ethiopia and across the diaspora. A map of its streets is a way to keep a specific place close, from the old centre to the neighbourhood where a family lived.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line to include a name or a date, and select one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand echoes the colours of the plateau.
