Misantla lies inland in the central part of Veracruz, where the land rises from the Gulf coastal plain toward the mountains. The town sits in a valley with a river beside it. Its streets have to deal with slopes, so the regular Spanish-colonial grid you might expect near the plaza soon bends, steps and breaks apart as it meets the hillsides.
From above, the centre is the most orderly part: a few blocks of near-rectangular streets around the main square. Further out, roads follow ridges and stream beds, and the outer neighbourhoods thin into single lanes that climb into farmland. The countryside around Misantla is known for coffee and citrus, and the hills stay green for much of the year.
