Te mapa
Mons is built on a hill, and its map is one of the most readable in Belgium. Narrow streets climb from every side toward the summit. There the Baroque belfry, listed by UNESCO, rises beside the old castle site, and the streets slope down from it to the Grand-Place.
Around the old town, a ring of boulevards follows the line of the demolished fortifications. It gives the city an almost perfect oval outline. Outside that ring, suburbs, rail lines and the motorway spread across the Hainaut plain, and waterways run through the lower ground to the north.
Mons is known for the Doudou, a festival held every year on Trinity Sunday, when Saint George's fight with the dragon is re-enacted on the Grand-Place. In 2015 the city was a European Capital of Culture. A Mons map poster shows the oval, the hill and the maze of streets inside the boulevards.
Wide boulevards follow the route of the old city walls. They surround the historic centre in a closed oval, and it is the most recognisable shape on the map.
Streets climb toward the summit where the belfry stands. Seen from above, they converge from all sides on the highest point of the town.
Just below the hill, the main square opens as a broad, irregular space within the narrow medieval streets. The Doudou festival takes place here each year.

Koteā ko Mons
Mons has a shape that works well as a print: an enclosed old town with a clear edge and a detailed interior. It suits students of its university, people with Walloon roots, and anyone who has spent a Trinity Sunday in the Grand-Place.
Change the title to a name or a date, or use the subtitle for a line in French. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper gives the oval of the old town an archival look.
