Motril is the main town on Granada's Costa Tropical, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean. On a map the old centre forms a dense knot of streets on rising ground. The flat delta plain of the Guadalfeo River spreads out to the west, and the port district of Puerto de Motril sits apart on the coast to the south.
