Mouila is the capital of the Ngounié province in southern Gabon and lies on the river of the same name. On the map, the river winds through the town, dividing it into parts connected by a bridge. Streets spread out on both banks in a loose, irregular pattern, and beyond the edges the built-up area gives way to forest and open grassland.
The town is an administrative and trading centre for the province, and the road through Mouila links the south of the country with the interior. Much of its layout follows the river: neighbourhoods run along the banks, and the main roads approach from both sides to meet at the crossing.
