Mudkhed lies in Nanded district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, on the flat, black-soil plains of the Deccan. The town is best known as a railway junction, where lines branch toward different parts of the region. The Godavari river flows not far away, one of the great rivers of peninsular India, crossing the plain toward Nanded and beyond.
