Te mapa
Murici lies in the Zona da Mata of Alagoas, in north-eastern Brazil, about an hour inland from Maceió. The town occupies low ground beside the Mundaú river. From here the surrounding hills rise in rounded forms, most of them covered by sugar cane, the crop that has shaped this region for centuries.
The map of the town is compact. A main road runs through it, and a small grid of streets spreads out from the centre and the church square, then quickly gives way to farmland. The river loops close to the houses. Beyond the town, contour-hugging tracks cross the cane fields and link scattered farms.
In the hills to the north lies the Murici Ecological Station, one of the most important surviving fragments of Atlantic Forest in north-eastern Brazil, known for several rare and endemic birds. A Murici map poster shows both sides of this landscape: a working sugar-country town and the green uplands that remain around it.
The river winds through the valley right beside the town. It gives the map a soft, meandering line running through the more regular streets.
A small, fairly regular street grid surrounds the centre and main square. It shows up as a tight cluster against the open country around it.
The hills of the Murici Ecological Station protect Atlantic Forest. On the poster they appear as open, unbroken ground on the northern side.
