Te mapa
Najibabad lies in Bijnor district, in the north-west of Uttar Pradesh, where the Gangetic plain begins to rise towards the Garhwal hills. From above, the town is a dense core of irregular lanes. Several roads lead out of it, including the route north towards Kotdwar and the hills.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century by Najib ad-Dawla, a Rohilla chief who became one of the most powerful figures in northern India at that time. The ruins of the fort associated with him, known as Pathargarh, stand on the edge of the town.
A Najibabad map poster shows a historic market town set in open, fertile country. The old centre is closely built and hard to navigate. Beyond it, the railway, the roads and the neighbouring villages spread out across farmland, with the first ridges of the Himalaya not far to the north.
The remains of the fort linked to Najib ad-Dawla sit near the town. Its outline is a reminder of the town's eighteenth-century origins as a Rohilla stronghold.
The centre is a close, irregular web of lanes and bazaars. This is the most finely detailed part of the map, and it works well in Noir.
Routes north towards Kotdwar and Garhwal lead out of the town. On the map they point towards the foothills just beyond the frame.
