Nalgonda lies in southern Telangana, about a hundred kilometres southeast of Hyderabad, in a landscape of granite outcrops and farmland. From above, the town is compact and irregular. Older lanes gather around the centre, newer colonies spread along the main roads, and the boulder-strewn hills that rise close to the edge of town interrupt the street pattern.
As headquarters of the district of the same name, Nalgonda serves a large rural area. The district includes the Nagarjuna Sagar dam on the Krishna River, one of the largest masonry dams in the world. Closer to town, traditional reservoirs known as tanks collect monsoon water and appear on the map as rounded, open shapes.
