Te mapa
Nanaimo lies on the east coast of Vancouver Island, facing the Strait of Georgia across from the mainland. It is a city of bays and headlands, with a working harbour at its centre and neighbourhoods spread over the rolling land behind.
From above, the coastline is the dominant feature: the downtown harbour, with its seawall walkway, and Newcastle Island, known as Saysutshun, sitting just offshore as a provincial park. Ferry terminals at Departure Bay and Duke Point link the city to the mainland, and streets climb inland in curving lines around lakes and hills.
Nanaimo grew as a coal-mining town in the nineteenth century, and the Bastion, a Hudson's Bay Company fort tower, still stands near the harbour. It is also known across Canada for the Nanaimo bar. A Nanaimo map poster shows a city shaped by its coastline and by the hills and lakes behind it.
The downtown harbour, with its marina and seawall walkway, forms the city's centre and gives the poster a detailed, irregular shoreline.
The wooded island park sits just across the harbour, a large, calm shape set in the water opposite the downtown streets.
Departure Bay and Duke Point terminals mark the city's links to the mainland, their piers visible along the coast.
