Te mapa
Narbonne lies in the Aude plain in Occitanie, a short distance inland from Mediterranean lagoons and beaches. Its map is organised around the Canal de la Robine, which crosses the historic centre in a gentle curve, with the old town on either side and boulevards following the line of former ramparts.
The city was founded in 118 BC as Narbo Martius, one of the first Roman colonies outside Italy, and a stretch of the Via Domitia is still exposed in the main square. Nearby stands the Cathedral of Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, whose tall Gothic choir was never completed, and the Pont des Marchands crosses the canal with buildings along it.
A Narbonne map poster shows these layers clearly. The canal cuts through the dense medieval streets, the ring of boulevards contains them, and newer districts, railway lines and vineyards spread outward toward the lagoons. It is a city whose ancient origins are still visible from above.
The canal curves through the centre of Narbonne and links to the Canal du Midi system, dividing the old town and giving the map its central line.
A section of the Roman road that connected Italy and Spain is exposed in the heart of the city, a reminder of Narbonne's origins as a Roman colony.
The Cathedral of Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, with its tall Gothic choir that was never completed, forms a notable block in the dense grain of the old town.
