Nehbandān lies in South Khorasan Province in eastern Iran, not far from the border with Afghanistan. The town stands on a dry, open plain at the edge of the Lut desert region, with rugged mountains nearby. From above, its streets form a compact settlement within a vast, almost empty landscape, crossed by a few long roads heading north and south.
In such a dry setting, water has always decided where people live, and irrigation channels and fields mark the land around many towns in the region.
