Te mapa
New Westminster sits on the north bank of the Fraser River, southeast of Vancouver. From above, the city climbs a steep slope from the water. Columbia Street and the waterfront run along the bottom, the downtown grid rises uphill in tight blocks, and residential streets continue over the crest. Across the river, the Queensborough neighbourhood sits on the eastern end of Lulu Island.
New Westminster was founded in 1859 as the capital of the Colony of British Columbia, and Queen Victoria chose its name, which is why it is called the Royal City. The capital later moved to Victoria, but the city remained an important river port. Queen's Park, near the top of the hill, is one of its oldest green spaces.
A New Westminster map poster shows a compact city shaped by its slope and river. In black and white the wide Fraser, the bridges crossing it and the steep grid rising from the waterfront create a clear, well-balanced composition.
The wide river runs along the city's southern edge, dividing the mainland from Queensborough. It is the largest shape on the poster.
Road and SkyTrain bridges cross the Fraser at New Westminster. They draw straight lines across the water and link the city to Surrey.
Downtown streets climb steeply from Columbia Street up the slope. On the map they form a dense, angled grid rising from the waterfront.
