Newnan is the seat of Coweta County, southwest of Atlanta along Interstate 85. It is often called the City of Homes, a name that refers to the many historic houses, some from before the Civil War, that survive along the streets around the old centre. Several of these residential districts are recognised on the National Register of Historic Places.
On the map the courthouse square is the anchor. Roads leave it in several directions, and around it the streets settle into a loose grid that grows less regular towards the edges of town. Further out, newer subdivisions add curving cul-de-sacs, and the interstate passes to the east as a strong diagonal line.
