Te mapa
North Cowichan is less a single town than a group of communities spread across the Cowichan Valley. The municipality surrounds the City of Duncan and reaches east to the coast at Maple Bay, Crofton and Chemainus. From above, you see a patchwork of farm roads, lake shorelines and forested slopes, with the Trans-Canada Highway running north to south through the middle.
Mount Tzouhalem rises between the valley floor and Cowichan Bay, and Quamichan and Somenos lakes sit in the farmland below it. Chemainus is known for the outdoor murals it began painting in the 1980s, after its sawmill declined. Crofton has a ferry to Salt Spring Island. The municipality also manages large areas of forest land of its own.
A North Cowichan map poster shows all of this in one frame: an irregular coastline broken by bays, clusters of streets at each village and lakes in the valley. The result is loose and varied, very different from a city grid, and it reads more like a landscape than a street plan.
Quamichan and Somenos lakes appear as two distinct shapes in the farmland near Duncan. They are surrounded by a light web of rural roads and field boundaries.
On the east side, the coast bends into sheltered bays and inlets. The irregular edge of land and sea gives the composition a strong outline.
Two compact harbour villages sit on the coast, each with its own small street pattern. Seen together, they look like separate islands of detail in a wider landscape.

Koteā ko North Cowichan
The Cowichan Valley is a place people choose deliberately, for the lakes, the farms and the pace of island life. A map of it suits a cabin wall, a new home in Maple Bay or a gift for someone who left the island.
Add your own title, a subtitle and the coordinates line, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The Blueprint style works especially well with the coastline.
